With Participation Towards a Climate-Friendly Future

Event Date: 29 November 2024

To achieve the ambitious net zero goal by 2050, active engagement of citizens and local stakeholders is key. At a collaborative conference held in Bern on November 29, 2024, organized by Pusch and the Energy City Association, municipalities, experts, and practitioners gathered to discuss successful participatory approaches for climate action.

The event highlighted the importance of:

  • Active participation from citizens, which is increasingly gaining momentum across cities and municipalities.
  • Inclusive and creative engagement processes that ensure no one is left behind while facilitating fun and accessible ways to take part in climate initiatives.
  • Addressing climate challenges urgently and collectively, emphasizing the need to transition from resistance to active involvement.

The conference included expert presentations and practical examples:

  • Nicole Haiderer shared insights on climate psychology, explaining how communication can drive behavioral change.
  • Joelle Mastic presented experiences from the EU-funded 2ISECAP Project, showcasing the role of co-creation in climate and energy planning.
  • The cities of Thun and Yverdon-les-Bains presented best practices, such as citizen assemblies and participatory strategies, emphasizing their role in achieving net zero.

Interactive workshops covered topics like refurbishment initiatives, climate communication, and practical co-creation methods for municipalities. Tools such as participatory budgets and innovative formats like “speed dating for building renovations” demonstrated how municipalities can engage stakeholders in accessible ways.

The conference reinforced the urgency of collaboration in achieving net zero goals, calling for a shift from passive awareness to concrete actions. Municipalities, citizens, and experts must work hand in hand to co-create climate-friendly futures—where everyone has a role and no one is left behind.

Warm acknowledgments were extended to contributors, including ENCO Energie-Consulting AG, 2ISECAP partners, and inspiring experts. This event serves as a blueprint for cities striving to unite communities in the fight against climate change.
